Johnny Maloney is a painter based in Houston, Texas. While his background is in filmmaking, his current focus is on highly narrative oil paintings depicting scenes inspired by the world around him. On his canvases the human form acts as a conduit for expressing themes of isolation, anxiety, and the loss of control living under systems of oppression. Synthesizing techniques learned from his history as a cinematographer, Maloney constructs irregular shapes to paint his stories onto, often extending or curving certain sides of the frame to give the suggestion of movement on a static image. Inviting the viewer's eyes to act as a camera panning across the scene. Johnny holds a Bachelor's degree in Film and TV from the prestigious, Victorian College of the Arts in Melbourne, Australia. He has exhibited in group and solo shows both in Melbourne and Houston, and has recently been accepted into the Glassell’s BLOCK XXV program. Maloney lives and works in Houston.
